Description

Crown of Thorns—also known as Christ Plant or Christ Thorn—is a striking, thorn-covered succulent shrub celebrated for its vibrant, long-lasting flowers and resilience in hot, sunny conditions.

🌿 Botanical Overview

  • Scientific Name: Euphorbia milii

  • Family: Euphorbiaceae

  • Type: Evergreen succulent shrub

  • Height: 2 to 3 feet (0.6 to 0.9 meters) in pots; up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) in the ground in ideal conditions

  • Spread: 1.5 to 3 feet (0.45 to 0.9 meters) wide

🌸 Flowers

  • Color: Bright red, pink, yellow, white, or bi-colored bracts (true flowers are small and yellow in the center)

  • Shape: Round, petal-like bracts surrounding tiny blooms

  • Blooming Season: Nearly year-round in warm climates, peak in spring and summer

  • Attracts: Butterflies and pollinators

🍃 Leaves

  • Color: Bright green to dark green

  • Shape: Oblong, spatula-shaped leaves

  • Texture: Smooth, fleshy leaves on thorny stems

🌱 Growth & Care

  • Sunlight: Full sun for best flowering (at least 5–6 hours daily)

  • Soil: Well-drained, sandy or cactus mix soil

  • Watering: Low water needs; water deeply but infrequently—allow soil to dry out between waterings

  • Growth Habit: Upright, branched stems covered in sharp spines

  • Pruning: Trim lightly to shape and encourage branching; wear gloves due to sharp thorns and toxic sap

⚠️ Caution: Milky sap is toxic if ingested and can irritate skin and eyes—keep away from pets and children.
