Description
Description
The Elephant Ear Plant gets its name from its large, heart-shaped or arrow-shaped leaves that resemble the ears of an elephant. These striking tropical plants are known for their bold foliage, which can grow anywhere from 1 to 3 feet wide and sit atop tall, sturdy stalks. Depending on the variety, the leaves may be lush green, deep purple, or even variegated with white or yellow patterns.
-
Height & Spread: Can grow between 3 to 6 feet tall indoors, and up to 8–10 feet outdoors in tropical climates.
-
Leaves: Dramatic, glossy, and prominently veined; some varieties point upward (Alocasia), while others droop downward (Colocasia).
-
Growth Habit: Fast-growing in warm, humid environments; thrives in containers, water gardens, or as statement plants in landscapes.
-
Origin: Native to tropical Asia and South America, commonly grown as ornamentals worldwide.
🌱 Quick Care Notes
-
Light: Bright, indirect light (tolerates some filtered sun).
-
Water: Loves consistently moist soil; Colocasia can even grow in shallow water.
-
Humidity: High humidity preferred (above 60%).
-
Soil: Rich, well-draining soil with organic matter.
-
Toxicity: Leaves and stems contain calcium oxalate crystals—toxic if ingested by pets or humans.
