Description

🌿 Fishbone Plant Overview:

  • Common Names:

    • Fishbone Cactus

    • Zigzag Cactus

    • Ric Rac Cactus

    • Orchid Cactus (less commonly)

  • Scientific Name: Disocactus anguliger (formerly Epiphyllum anguliger)

  • Family: Cactaceae

  • Origin: Native to the rainforests of Mexico

🌱 Appearance:

  • Leaves (Technically Stems):

    • Long, flat, fleshy stems with deep zigzag or “fishbone” notches

    • Bright to deep green color

    • Grows in a cascading form—ideal for hanging baskets or shelf edges

  • Growth Habit: Trailing or arching; fast-growing under ideal conditions

🌸 Flowers:

  • Blooming:

    • Rare indoors but possible with proper care

    • Night-blooming, fragrant flowers—large, creamy-white to pale yellow blooms

    • Bloom time is typically late fall or early winter

  • Fragrance: Sweet, often compared to vanilla or jasmine

☀️ Care Requirements:

  • Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal; tolerates some morning sun.

    • Too much direct sun can scorch leaves

  • Water:

    • Keep soil lightly moist during the growing season; let dry slightly between waterings

    • Reduce watering in winter

  • Soil:

    • Light, well-draining cactus mix with added organic matter (e.g. orchid bark or peat)

  • Humidity: Prefers higher humidity than desert cacti (mimics rainforest conditions)

  • Temperature: 60–80°F (15–27°C); protect from cold drafts and frost
