Description

Haworthia herbacea is a compact, slow-growing succulent admired for its attractive rosette of thick, fleshy leaves. Native to South Africa, it is an excellent choice for indoor gardens, desktops, windowsills, and succulent collections due to its low-maintenance nature and unique appearance.

Plant Overview

  • Botanical Name: Haworthia herbacea
  • Common Name: Haworthia Herbacea, Star Window Haworthia
  • Plant Type: Succulent
  • Origin: South Africa
  • Growth Habit: Compact rosette
  • Mature Size: 5–10 cm (2–4 inches) tall and 8–15 cm (3–6 inches) wide
  • Growth Rate: Slow
  • Pet Friendly: Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though it's still best to prevent pets from chewing on plants.

Appearance

Haworthia herbacea forms symmetrical rosettes of triangular, fleshy green leaves. Depending on the variety, the leaves may feature:

  • White raised tubercles or speckles
  • Semi-transparent "window" tips that help the plant absorb light
  • Fine ridges or subtle patterns
  • A star-like growth habit

During spring or summer, mature plants may produce slender flower stalks bearing small white tubular flowers.

Care Guide

☀️ Light

  • Prefers bright, indirect sunlight.
  • Can tolerate gentle morning sun.
  • Avoid prolonged harsh afternoon sun, which may scorch the leaves.

💧 Water

  • Water only when the soil has completely dried.
  • Typically every 2–3 weeks during active growth.
  • Reduce watering significantly during winter.

🌱 Soil

Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix with added perlite or coarse sand to prevent root rot.

🌡️ Temperature

  • Ideal range: 18–30°C (65–86°F)
  • Protect from frost.
  • Avoid temperatures below 5°C (41°F).

💦 Humidity

Thrives in normal indoor humidity and does not require misting.

🌿 Fertilizer

Feed with a diluted cactus fertilizer once every 6–8 weeks during spring and summer.
