Description

The Red Ginger Plant (Alpinia purpurata), also known as Ostrich Plume Ginger or Pink Cone Ginger, is a tropical flowering plant known for its vibrant red or pink bracts that resemble flowers. It belongs to the Zingiberaceae (Ginger) family and is native to Malaysia, New Caledonia, and the Pacific Islands.

Key Features:

  • Flowers & Bracts: The true flowers are small and hidden within the showy, bright red or pink bracts, which last for weeks.
  • Leaves: Large, glossy green, lance-shaped leaves grow in an alternating pattern along the stems.
  • Height: Can grow between 4 to 15 feet, depending on conditions.
  • Growth Habit: A clumping, upright plant with a rhizomatous root system.

Growing Conditions:

  • Light: Prefers partial shade to full sun. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves.
  • Soil: Thrives in rich, well-draining, moist soil with organic matter.
  • Watering: Requires regular watering, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy.
  • Temperature & Humidity: Loves warm (above 60°F or 15°C), humid conditions and is not frost-tolerant.
  • Maintenance: Low-maintenance but benefits from pruning dead leaves and spent bracts to encourage new growth.
