Description
The Scarlet Clock Vine (Thunbergia coccinea) is a stunning, fast-growing tropical climbing vine known for its bright scarlet, tubular flowers and lush green foliage. It belongs to the Acanthaceae family and is native to Southeast Asia, particularly India and the Himalayas.
Key Features:
- Flowers: Produces pendulous clusters of scarlet-red, trumpet-shaped flowers with yellow throats, blooming profusely in warm climates.
- Leaves: Heart-shaped to lance-shaped, deep green leaves provide a striking contrast to the flowers.
- Growth Habit: A twining, vigorous climber that can reach 10 to 20 feet in length.
- Blooming Season: Flowers primarily in late summer to fall, sometimes extending into winter in warm climates.
Growing Conditions:
- Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. More sunlight encourages abundant flowering.
- Soil: Thrives in well-draining, rich, loamy soil.
- Watering: Needs regular watering but does not tolerate waterlogged conditions. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings.
- Temperature & Humidity: Loves warm, humid climates (above 55°F/13°C). Not frost-tolerant and needs protection in colder regions.
- Pruning: Regular trimming helps maintain its shape and promotes more blooms.
