The Staghorn Fern, scientifically known as Platycerium spp., is a fascinating and unique fern species that stands out for its distinctive fronds and epiphytic growth habit. This fern belongs to the Polypodiaceae family and is native to tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Here's a description of the Staghorn Fern:

Appearance: Staghorn Ferns are named for their distinctive fronds, which resemble the antlers of a stag or deer. These fronds come in two distinct forms:

  1. Sterile Fronds (Shield Fronds): These are flat, round to shield-shaped fronds that grow close to the mounting surface. They are typically green or gray-green and serve to protect the roots and provide stability.
  2. Fertile Fronds (Antler Fronds): These are the long, branching, and antler-like fronds that extend outward from the center of the plant. They are typically divided into segments and are covered in small spore-bearing structures on their undersides.

The unique fronds and their epiphytic growth habit, often mounted on trees or other surfaces, give the Staghorn Fern a distinctive and striking appearance.

Habitat and Growing Conditions: In their natural habitat, Staghorn Ferns are typically found growing on trees or rocks in the understory of tropical rainforests. When cultivated as houseplants, they require specific care conditions:

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light. They do best with filtered sunlight or dappled shade. Avoid exposing them to direct sunlight, which can scorch the fronds.

  • Watering: Staghorn Ferns prefer to be kept consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water them thoroughly when the top inch of the mounting medium (usually sphagnum moss) feels slightly dry. Mist the fronds regularly to maintain humidity.

  • Humidity: These ferns thrive in high humidity environments. To increase humidity, mist the fronds daily or place a humidity tray nearby.

  • Temperature: Keep the fern in a warm environment, ideally between 60°F to 80°F (15°C to 27°C). Protect it from drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations.

  • Mounting Medium: Staghorn Ferns are often mounted on wooden plaques or boards with sphagnum moss. This mimics their natural epiphytic growth habit.

Aesthetic Appeal: Staghorn Ferns are prized for their unique and eye-catching appearance. They make stunning living wall art and can be mounted on walls or hung in decorative planters. Their distinctive fronds and epiphytic growth habit make them an excellent choice for adding a touch of the exotic to your indoor or outdoor space.

Propagation: Staghorn Ferns can be propagated by dividing offsets or pups from the parent plant. Wait until the pup is large enough to handle, then carefully detach it from the parent and mount it on its own support. The pup should be well-established before separating it.

In summary, the Staghorn Fern is a captivating and unusual fern species known for its distinctive antler-like fronds and epiphytic growth habit. With proper care and attention to their specific requirements, these ferns can thrive as a unique and stunning addition to your plant collection or living decor.

3-6 hrs of direct sunlight

Place your plant where it has direct access to sunlight. Direct light is when the plant receives yellow sunlight beams for at least 4 to 5 hours in a day.

Water when topsoil is dry. Don't over water.

Poke your finger/plain small stick into the soil to check the moisture.
Water when the topsoil (1-2 inch) in pot feels dry to touch..
Apply water probably in the morning or evening time.
Do not overwater the plant.
As a rule of thumb, water the plant thoroughly in the summer and reduce watering in winter and rainy season.
